The Burnaby Judo Club is a non-profit, volunteer-run society. We are dedicated to promoting, teaching, and practicing Judo. Our club was founded in the mid-1960’s. Since that time we have been a leader in the judo community, welcoming people from all walks of life into our dojo. Judo is for everyone, and we have members of all ages and abilities.
Judo club location
We are centrally located in the Bonsor Recreation Complex in Burnaby, BC, across from Metrotown. Bonsor is easily accessible by car (with free parking), skytrain, and major bus routes.
Our dojo
We have a dedicated dojo space on the lower level of Bonsor that is bright, climate-controlled, and clean. Our mats meet European Judo Union standards. Lockers, showers, and washroom facilities are located just down the hall.
Free trial
We are knowledgeable, friendly, inclusive, and safe. Come see what it’s all about and try our no pressure free two week trials (not available for our 5 week summer session).
Judo is …
Judo is an Olympic sport. It’s a complete combat sport involving both standing and grappling (groundwork) techniques.
Judo is an excellent form of exercise. Regular practitioners develop agility, balance, coordination, strength, fitness and overall conditioning.
Judo is a way of life with core values including: courtesy, courage, sincerity, honour, respect, modesty, self-control, friendship: Judo – Value for Life
Judo is fun! You can learn techniques and begin to play almost right away, but there is always more to learn and ways to develop and deepen your practice. Judo is mastered over a lifetime.
Our programs and approach to judo
We run judo classes from beginner to advanced – including competitive programs – for children, youth, and adults. We also offer specific training sessions and events (e.g. kata). Our instructors are NCCP-certified and provide a fun, safe, and effective training environment.
Burnaby Judo Club emphasizes proper technique and technical excellence as foundational to the safe practice of judo.
At judo we are all judo friends. We like to compete and to win, but our main goals are to encourage the pursuit of personal excellence and to foster a sense of community. We want each member of our community to be able to enjoy their judo practice over the course of a lifetime.
