Below is a summary of the main club rules. Please note that parents/guardians and applicants are required to accept and agree to the Burnaby Judo Club Rules and Code of Conduct when registering with the Burnaby Judo Club.
Judo’s core values are courtesy, courage, sincerity, honour, modesty, self-control, respect, and friendship. Judo is fun, but remember it is a fighting sport. Respect for instructors, other players, officials, and judo rules is essential to safety, efficient learning, and having fun.
We demonstrate each of these core values through:
Good Manners
- try to arrive a few minutes early for the practice
- be courteous and helpful to each other – e.g. saying hello when you come into the dojo helps to build our judo community;
- authentic, respectful communication is core to judo
- use the correct forms of standing or kneeling bows
- follow the instruction provided by our instructors and address them in the proper manner (instructors are referred to as “Sensei”)
- avoid idle talk while on the mat and be quiet and attentive when not practicing
- no lounging on the mat, sit properly
- ask the instructor for permission to leave the mat area for any reason
- help clean the mat area after practice
Good Hygiene – Judo is a close contact sport
- shower before and after your workout
- wear a clean judogi that is in good repair
- wear slippers off mat and no bare feet off the mat
- keep finger and toe nails clean and trimmed
- no jewelry or body piercings
- do not attend practice if you have an infection or are ill
- keep the dojo clean and organized:
